GOLFING SOCIETY- SUFFOLK TOUR 2026

Oil Industries Club Golf Society – Suffolk Tour 2026

Day 1 – Ipswich Golf Club (Purdis Heath)
Despite a stormy start and challenging driving conditions, our Suffolk Tour got underway at the excellent Ipswich Golf Club. Sunshine soon returned, and after a great lunch, we enjoyed the first round of our three-day singles competition. A fantastic course, great company, and a well-earned evening watching the football rounded off the day.

⛳ Day 2 – Woodbridge Golf Club
Another hot day greeted us at the historic Woodbridge Golf Club. The challenging course tested everyone in the heat, but the competition remained close. The day finished with drinks by the marina and an excellent evening meal at the Salthouse Hotel.

🌊 Day 3 – Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club
Our final round brought cooler conditions thanks to a refreshing sea breeze. Felixstowe Ferry provided a true links-style challenge with firm fairways, coastal winds, and spectacular views of windsurfers and kite surfers. A memorable finish to a fantastic tour.

🏆 Prize Giving
Congratulations to:
🥇 Peter Newman – 1st Place
🥈 Dennis Woods – 2nd Place
🥉 Ian Huxford – 3rd Place

The scores were incredibly close, making for a competitive and enjoyable tournament throughout.

Thank You
A huge thank you to our Captain, Bob Reid, and Secretary, Ian Palethorp, for organising another outstanding tour. Special recognition to Bob, who despite being injured and unable to play, supported the group throughout all three days a commitment that was greatly appreciated by everyone.

Looking Ahead
Next year's tour will celebrate the 90th Anniversary of the Oil Industries Club Golf Society with a trip to Devon. If you're interested in joining a friendly and welcoming golf society, we'd be delighted to hear from you.

Here's to another successful tour and many more to come!

GOLFING SOCIETY MATCH AGAINST ROBIN HOOD GOLF CLUB

May 28th, 2026

On May 28th, our Golf Society team travelled to Robin Hood Golf Course in Solihull to take on the Club in our annual match. We were greeted with great hospitality, enjoying a drink in the Clubhouse bar followed by an excellent lunch. The lunch was fun, and it was good to get to know our opposition before going out onto the course and competing in our match.

The course was in excellent conditions, considering the night before there had been a massive thunderstorm following the very dry and extremely hot few days before. The rain was torrential by all accounts, and rivers were flowing through the golf course. By the time we got to play after lunch, there was very little evidence of this storm, and as I say, the course was in great condition.

This being the case, there was no ready excuse for our team to be beaten 3 games to one. So we drove home the losers but having enjoyed a great lunch and an enjoyable round of golf.

We play a match against Robin Hood Golf Course each year, and next year they will travel south where we will play them at one of our regular venues in the South of England.

The picture shows both teams enjoying lunch prior to our match in the dining room of the Robin Hood Golf Club

At the 2026 annual lunch and golf competition for Past Captains of the Oil Industries Club Golf Society (OICGS), Andrew Cook was presented with Honorary Membership of the Oil Industries Club.

Andrew is a long-serving member of the Club, having joined in 1970. He was Hon. Secretary of the Golf Society in 1982, as well as serving as Captain in the same year.

He has played in many OICGS competitions with the following results:

Dalley Cup (Spring) - 1976/1984
Coronation Cup (Summer) - 1994

He has won all four of our major trophies and therefore is in possession of our version of the ‘Grand Slam’.

GOLFING SOCIETY- HANKLEY COMMON GOLF CLUB

May 6th, 2026

On Wednesday, May 6th, members of the golf society and their guests gathered at Hankley Common Golf Club for the first major competition of the year. Despite the forecast being less than favourable, the conditions were in fact extremely pleasant. A slight wind that at times felt cold but enough sunshine to keep us all warm and feeling like spring may have at last arrived.

The golf course was in fabulous condition, with the green being fast and catching many out when it was time to putt.

This year, we tried a different format. Instead of arriving and having a bacon roll followed by golf and then a carvery lunch, we arrived late morning followed by a ham, egg, and chip lunch. We then played our golf followed by sandwiches and prize-giving.

We were playing for the Daily Cup, a trophy that has been played for by the Oil Industries Club for 95 years. Even though our golf society is only 89 years old, the Daley Cup matches started some 7 years before the Society formed, with the first winner on the trophy being in 1931.

This year’s winner was Brian Stopp on a great score of 38 points. It was good to see Brian back and competing after getting over a recent injury that kept him out of golf for a lot of last year.

2nd prize went to David Meldram

3rd prize went to Dennis Woods

Our guest prize was won by Jeremy Glanville-Jones

Well done to everyone, and we look forward to our next OICGS golf day.
